Irish Brown Bread Recipe

When it comes to being a family therapist, I truly believe cooking together can be a fabulous way to reconnect after a busy week and have a little fun. This recipe is one that my mom has passed down. And, this is a hearty bread that is full of healthy digestive fiber, sustainable energy form the whole grains, and a small amount of protein. Overall, it is a perfect bread for the best start to your day. So, make it before you goto bed and it will be delicious for breakfast next to some scrambled eggs. Also, this recipe for Irish Brown Bread is also vegetarian. Therefore, it makes a great vegetarian recipe for picky eaters. So, slice and melt some butter on top of your freshly baked slice!  Enjoy!!

INGREDIENTS:
Toasted Wheat Germ and Wheat Bran

  • 3 tablespoons Wheat Germ
  • 3 tablespoons Wheat Bran
Irish Brown Bread

  • 1 3/4 cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Quick Oats
  • 1 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Cold Butter, Diced Plus Additional For Greasing Pan
  • 1 cup Guinness Beer or other favorite Sout Beer
  • 1 cup Buttermilk

INSTRUCTIONS

Toasted Wheat Germ and Wheat Bran

  1. Preheat Oven to 350°.
  2. Spread wheat germ and wheat bran in a thin layer on baking sheet. Bake for 5-8 minutes until starting to lightly brown.

Irish Brown Bread

Preheat oven to 425°. Grease a 9″x5″x3″ Loaf Pan with butter. Set aside.

  1. Combine all dry ingredients plus toasted wheat germ and wheat bran in a stand mixer or large bowl, until well combined.
  2. Add butter and mix until butter is well incorporated, and the size of small peas.
  3. Add beer and buttermilk. Mix on low or by hand until just combined being careful not to over mix.
  4. Add dough to prepared pan. Sprinkle top with 1 tablespoon remaining quick oats.
  5. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean.
  6. Let cool 10 minutes before removing from pan to cool on a cooling rack.
