What Happens When You Do Yoga?

Katie Ziskind LMFT, RYT500

Running, bike riding, and gym work outs in Southeastern Connecticut have many benefits including more energy, improved mood, balanced mood, better sleep and better sex, as well as depression management and anxiety management. So, going for a run on the Niantic Bay Boardwalk can be positive. However, yoga therapy in Niantic at Wisdom Within Counseling, a holistic marriage and family therapy practice, also provides these benefits and more!

Are Bikram yoga and hot yoga the same?

Bikram yoga and hot yoga are not the same thing. For instance, Zen and Now in Niantic offers yoga in a room heated to about 85 degrees. So, hot yoga is a general type of yoga that is in a heated room, but can vary depending on the studio location and yoga culture. And, the temperature of the heat varies from studio to studio. Furthermore, some hot yoga classes may be warm at 70° where as other hot yoga classes are over 100° with high humidity. Be prepared to sweat if you choose to goto hot yoga!

What is happening at Wisdom Within Counseling in Niantic?

When we do yoga therapy at my counseling office, Wisdom Within Counseling in Niantic, we will be in a room temperature space, that is not heated. Moreover, soothing yoga poses and breathing techniques will be guided for your mind, body, and spirit in a gentle manor. This practice can be personalized for all ages and levels.

Can yoga help depression?

Depression is a severe condition, but it can be very much helped with yoga. Especially with less sunlight in East Lyme, Connecticut in the winter, depression can quickly get worse. And, depression can make people lethargic, tried, and very sad. Isolating, a symptom of depression, can make feelings worse. So, yoga is a weapon in the fight against depression and depression management skills. I interweave, art, yoga, music, and outdoor therapies with traditional marriage and family therapy in Niantic.

How do I start getting into yoga?

Furthermore, beginners of yoga need to have a yoga teacher or expert guide, such as myself, who has specialized yoga therapy training. I have specialized yoga therapy training that allows me to help support your mind, body, and spirt. And, it is important to have proper alignment in your yoga poses before trying it at home. For instance, going a yoga therapy class in Niantic at Wisdom Within Counseling will teach you how to be more self-aware to calm anxiety and understand your triggers emotionally. Once you feel comfortable with your teacher, studio, and class flow, then you can create a home yoga practice. Besides helping with weight-loss, yoga helps with depression, mood stability, stress reduction, and anxiety management skills.

What are some of the health benefits of hot yoga?

To begin, hot yoga has benefits including increased flexibility because the room is warmer. Some benefits include increased flexibility, increases muscle strength and tone, improved heart health and breathing, vitality, and self- confidence. Read more about on of my areas of expertise, yoga therapy for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), here. Additionally, hot yoga classes are often more athletic, can’t even feel like a Boot Camp, and is a very athletic style practice. Just so you know, hot yoga is typically not gentle, however you can go to any class and modify poses and take breaks as needed. In Niantic, yoga therapy is calming, soothing, and supportive for your mind, body, and spirit. Bikram yoga tends to be much more strict and rigid about their practice. A Vinyasa flow studio will be more easy-going if you take a break or need some water. At Wisdom Within Counseling in Niantic, we keep it gentle and all about self-awareness.

Is hot yoga safe to practice on a regular basis, i.e. a few times a week, or should it be used as a supplement to one’s regular routine?

First off, hot yoga can be done as often as one would like, typically 3 to 5 days a week at most. However, supplementing with electrolytes is absolutely essential. Water is not enough in a daily practice of hot yoga. So, coconut water that is 100% coconut water is a great source of electrolytes for your hot yoga practice! Many yoga studios off and sell coconut water behind the desk for purchase. It’s also important to replenish with a large meal a few hours after hot yoga class otherwise you will feel lethargic and tired. It is such a huge endeavor physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

What should a novice know before attempting hot yoga? Is it best to achieve a moderate level of physical fitness before attending a hot-yoga class for the first time?

I would not recommend a brand new person take a hot class. Instead, I recommend starting with a gentle, all levels or basic, room temperature yoga class to start. Because the heat adds a layer of sensation, it is best to start room temperature. Once you are comfortable with poses, understands body alignment, and then the hot yoga can be added.

What is yoga therapy in Niantic at Wisdom Within Counseling?

Yoga is a calming way to get your mind under control. After a yoga class, you’ll feel relaxed and ready to take on your day. Furthermore, yoga offers challenging positions that essentially force your mind to focus rather than daydream. When you move your body, your mind and spirit follow you into this present moment. A yoga class is a healing journey. Depending on the type of class, you’ll feel physical sensation and emotions and a soft landing at the end in relaxation. Every class ends with chavasana, final resting pose, in yoga, to allow you to receive the benefits and remain calm after class.
