Hi, I’m Katie Ziskind, a licensed psychologist, in Niantic, Connecticut at Wisdom Within Counseling. I hope you enjoy the article below, which will give you a better understanding of therapy in East Lyme.
What happens in couples therapy?
In couples counseling and marriage therapy, you have an opportunity to work through past trauma, understand the source of the demon fights, lower intensity of fights, take responsibility for your part, better understand your partner, and learn healthy conflict resolution skills, so fights no longer affect your children negatively. I make marriage counseling fun through enactments, play, and art. Read more, here. As a psychologist, I help you and your partner move from conflict and frustration to intimacy and connection! Where do sessions take place?
My office is located at 461 Main Street, Niantic, CT 06357. It is a beautiful Victorian building a short drive off the highway. You may not see a sign for your Niantic psychologist, but you will see a sign that says, “Brian’s Healing Hearts” outside. Sessions generally take place in my private therapy office (located near Tony D’s Creamery and directly across from Casablanca’s Wicker Furniture on Main Street, Niantic, CT). I also provide phone or secure video conferencing sessions for those of you seeking support from a psychologist across the miles.
How long are the sessions?
As we enter into our therapeutic work together, we typically meet for 45-50 minutes per session. I suggest beginning with consistency, with weekly sessions, until therapeutic goals are met. I offer 90-minute sessions, upon request.
When it comes to marriage and family therapy, personal growth and inner resilience are most effective with structure, reliability, and consistency. AS a psychologist in Niantic, I do my best work with clients when we meet consistently each week or more (if you are newly sober or need more support than weekly). I see clients by appointment, both daytime and evening hours. Clients also make the most progress when they commit to this process of therapy and to themselves by attending weekly sessions for six to nine months.
Traditionally, client’s attend one 45 minute session per week. Some clients may attend as often as three times per week when that structure is appropriate. Some clients attend for six to nine months, while others enjoy going to therapy for years.
To make the most of the skills you will learn from your psychologist, you want to keep a binder of therapy homework and counseling handouts, such as CBT, DBT, and other handouts. You’ll want to keep up your motivation as you develop an open mind, positive perspective, and healthy coping skills. Your old habits and behaviors will gradually and organically develop into positive habits. During this process, at Wisdom Within Counseling, a practice for marriage and family therapy in Niantic, new neural pathways in your brain will form!
