Wisdom Within Counseling and Coaching in Niantic, Connecticut is currently accepting master’s level counseling interns.
Interns will support the overall wellness of children, adults, families, and couples. We are a fun, holistic, and creative group of clinicians who value working collaboratively.
It is essential that interns at Wisdom Within Counseling align with the holistic, creative arts, and mind body mission and values.
Holistic Counseling Internship Details
Our Master’s Level Counseling Internship Program provides you with the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, including individuals, couples, and families. We supply play therapy items, puppets, games, play dough, art materials, clay, water colors, and holistic therapy items to use with youth.
You’ll gain experience in assessment, documentation, treatment planning, and therapy under the supervision of Katie Ziskind, licensed marriage and family therapist, Gottman level two marriage therapist, and yoga therapist.
This program is designed to help you transition from the classroom to a successful counseling career.

To be eligible for our master’s level counseling internship program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Intern Must Be Currently Enrolled In A Master’s Degree Program For Counseling (Ie, Marital and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Mental Health Counseling Master’s Programs, ect)
- Master’s Level Counseling Intern Must Make A Commitment of 20 hours per Week In-Person In Niantic, Connecticut
- Good Academic Standing
- Strong Communication, Organization, and Interpersonal Skills

I enjoy the flexibility and being able to create my own schedule that works best for my clients and myself. There is supportive supervision whether it is individual or group supervision. As a clinical intern at WWC, I have felt supported by my supervisor and the other therapists that work here. Even as an intern, I feel that I am treated as a valued member of the therapeutic team, and I have learned a lot within my journey at this site so far.
My marital and family therapy practicum and internship has been a positive experience.
I didn’t know what I would face being an intern and having never been with clients like this before, and I don’t feel judged or belittled, which has been very positive. I feel grateful to be here as I am comparing it to friends and classmates who are interning and their supervisors make them feel bad for speaking up, or like they have stupid questions.
Katie’s presence as my supervisor helps me feel safe asking questions.
Also, I feel comfortable and I have never felt I have had silly questions. It is easy for me to bring my biases and anxiety about working with different and challenging clients to supervision and that reduces my stress a lot. Katie is calm and I feel I can be honest. I feel Katie has my back as my supervisor. I feel good. As a supervisor, Katie makes herself available outside of supervision. I have her personal number. Also,I know I will hear from her within 24 hours if not in a few hours and I appreciate that Katie sends me resources that I can use with my clients.

Each therapist is able to specialize in their interest, as well as explore a variety of modalities and populations. It is truly a holistic, collaborative, and eclectic environment.

As an intern, there is a level of independence expected that can, at first, be intimidating. It is easy to worry that you won’t know what to do or will make a mistake on paperwork you’ve spent hours being trained on. As much as the level of independence can feel scary, you are not on your own at WWC.

Flexibility and healthy flow of information, communication is great.
Being a part of a smaller practice feels more intimate. If you plan to work in private practice one day, this is an awesome site to get a feel and learn more about what it looks like to own your own practice. The flexibility is my favorite part and being able to utilize holistic and expressive arts in my therapeutic work allows me to be my authentic self as a clinical intern/therapist.
Katie ensures that each individual therapist knows the signs of burn out, and is flexible ensuring that each clinician has the time and capacity to care for themselves — whether it’s taking a day off, planning a group bonding experience, or talking it our. Clinicians at WWC, as a team, care for each other and check in with one another (lending consultation, a listening ear, or moral support).
I feel as though I am always having conversations with Katie about how I’m feeling with clients and work-life balance.
Katie makes it clear to the team that she does not want anyone to feel burdened by the work. And she walks the walk! A great example is set when you see the owner of the practice taking time off, making room for training and education, and taking part in self-care practices.
As a supervisor, you encourage me to do self-care and I do feel supported when I need time off or want to take a vacation. Working in a holistic setting reminds me of how important self-care is. When working with clients, I always take a quick break to eat a healthy snack, drink tea or water, and meditate before the next client walks in. That way I can be more present with my clients and with myself.

As an intern, I am not worried about getting lost in the work and not know what to do. I feel 100% confident that I have access to the expertise of others on the team to help with anything I may need. The other therapists are very friendly. I feel at home when I come to do my work here. And, I love that we are a team of holistic people who strive to help children, teens, and adults feel safe and whole. One of the greatest challenges that I have experiences at WWC is learning to be just as vulnerable as my clients are — sharing in supervision, owning up to mistakes, knowing that I can not always give 110%, allowing myself to have good and bad days.
Working at Wisdom Within Counseling means more flexibility in treating each client as an individual, based on their individual needs.
I am not stuck in a one-size-fits-all mode. When I feel something isn’t working, I can try something else such as art, painting, or walking outdoors. I like that I can use my guitar to write a song or play a board game.
At an agencies, they may focus on brief therapy like just seeing a client for six weeks and then they are out the door.
Here, you get to build a relationship with the client and there is not as much pressure. I like that there are no insurance policies and I can use other things in addition to CBT. The relationship building aspect is so nice.
One of my favorite parts of working at WWC is the holistic, private pay model.
Clients want to be here, pay up front, and it makes the work more fulfilling. I experience less burnout and the work is less exhausting for me as the therapist. No client is required to attend therapy or mandated. They each really want to be here. My clients are more engaged and fill up the time we have. They are motivated to be here.
It feels good to be a creative, holistic therapist at Wisdom Within Counseling.
I love the office space I love the snacks and water being in the lobby for clients to have and it feels inviting. I appreciate the art materials, play therapy items, like scarves, and DBT workbooks in each room.
Being able to have options and the freedom to use art and musical instrument is great. I never run out of ideas.
I love the office space. It is so homey and all my clients say it is homey too. I feel safe in WWC.
I love the creative arts approach and materials available as they are helpful and it gives a personalized approach, not a one size fits all.
Having options is nice for children. I had a child client who was like, “I need to get outside,” and it is safe outside. We went outdoors. I like the fact that we can be creative. I like that clients come in knowing they can express themselves in different ways. Even adults see the toys and puppets and relax. An adult male clients shared that though he may not paint, he feels calmer knowing that he can if he wants to. It isn’t intimidating. It is not a sterile environment.
I love our supervision sessions when you share what you would say to pause a conflict or help couples go deeper, and how you would approach couples as a whole.
Also, I like being able to integrate those things after supervision. I know I can access you via email and text too and I appreciate how reachable you are. Anything I need, I feel reassured that we talk about it in supervision.
I love the Namaste room! (It is the room I am in all the time) I love it’s flow and I feel very comfortable in there.
There is something amazing and different about working here. I love working with these adolescents and their families. The families I get to work with are quite amazing.
They take every suggestion and recommendation, and implement it to the fullest. I love these parents because they give to their children and teens and are so motivated. I truly enjoy meeting all the siblings too. My clients are also so insightful. I truly enjoy the journey with them.
I have really enjoyed my experience at Wisdom Within Counseling.
I have learned so many different therapeutic styles and have worked with an extremely diverse client population. I don’t think I would have been able to treat so many clients with different diagnoses if I were interning anywhere else.
Katie was a huge support with weekly supervision and was there at any time for questions or concerns I had about a case.
Additionally, I was able to learn not just the client-facing side of a private practice but also the administrative duties—onboarding clients, client communication, billing, consults, charting, etc.
I believe Wisdom Within Counseling gave me the tools to move forward in my career with a broad array of skills that can be transferred to many different jobs in the future.
The training and onboarding was more complex than I had received at any other job or career before.
But this was because it completely readied me for working with clients one-on-one right when the internship started.
We did mock-sessions with different types of mock-clients and we did all different types of training sessions, including administrative duties, phone consults, and learning client and charting software.
One of the most amazing parts of the training was that Katie requires Gottman Level 1 & 2 Marriage Therapy training, free of charge to the intern. This allows them a very well-respected certification and amazing training to work with couples, whether in internship or in the future. This is such a gift!
Wisdom Within Counseling has given me the opportunity to really learn about all different diagnoses and how to work with clients in a holistic way, doing things not so traditional as just talk therapy.
I got to utilize Child-play therapy, Expressive-arts therapy, Trauma-focused, Mindfulness-based CBT, body scans, walk-and-talks with clients, the list goes on. Having the freedom to work with each client individually based on their therapeutic needs, was wonderful and is so beneficial to the clients. It also allowed me to understand better the therapies that I enjoy most, too.
WWC was able to pull from my career background in Recreation Therapy to match me with children and adolescents at first, but over time I was matched with clients of all ages with a range of reasons for coming to counseling. Towards the end, I have worked with clients with anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic disorder, substance use disorders, adjustment disorders, and narcissistic abuse recovery. Like stated earlier, this range of client work I do not believe I could have gotten anywhere else.
WWC is a calm work environment, with a great group of women with different specialized backgrounds.
WWC matches their clients to therapists who they believe will be the absolute best fit for the client, at the best interest of the client. The group of therapists are supportive of each other and everyone works together to find solutions when necessary. The owner is very present, always reachable, and supportive in whichever way is needed for each individual therapist.
It was great to be able to talk out any and all questions and concerns about client cases with Katie.
The ability to go through the entire roster of clients weekly and get her feedback or two cents regarding an issue was very helpful. Katie is able to reflect on things that I may not have seen in session but when speaking about it again, with fresh eyes, new thoughts and ideas appear!
Wisdom Within Counseling offices have a whimsical, calming vibe.
You walk in and there’s twinkle lights and sound machines, cozy couches and toys for children or siblings to play with while they wait in the waiting room. I have even seen a parent or two fall asleep waiting for their child to finish a session and they admit that it’s because it is so relaxing in there! Each therapy office has different board games, card games, puppets, instruments, an assortment of art materials, and cozy couches and chairs. Children are excited for the toys and the adolescents and adults love the comfortable sitting areas and warm blankets!
