Adolescent, Teen, & Young Adult Specialist

What About Teens Makes You Love Working With Them?

Teenagers are in such an important stage in their life where they are learning to become independent and develop autonomy from their parents while simultaneously needing the support and guidance from positive adults in their lives. I love helping them navigate through the various stressors unique to adolescence.

A Fun Fact About Courtney

In my free time, I love to read Lianne Moriarity and Mary Kay Andrews novels and spend time with my two cats, Dolly and Ellie.

A Note From Courtney

I am absolutely thrilled to be joining as a new addition to the Wisdom Within Counseling team of therapists. The welcoming and supportive environment that Katie has created not only empowers her clients and motivates them to grow, but motivates me to constantly strive professionally and hone my skills working with children, adolescents, parents and families. I am excited to run the Teen Girls’ Group Mondays at 5:30 PM as of March 2019. Read more details about the Teen Girls’ Group here. Teen girls who struggle with low self-esteem, social skills, self-empowerment, and developing a pattern of positive self talk will benefit from the safe environment of this group and blossom into confident and thriving young women.

Anxious Adolescents, Teen Depression, Self-Harm

I am a licensed social worker and have experience working in an agency setting as an outpatient therapist, doing similar work with children, teens and their caregivers. Additionally, I have experience practicing social work in a high school setting and therefore understand the importance of collaborating with other providers or sources of support teens are receiving. As a teen specialist, I am skilled in helping teens address and conquer the challenges they may face including, peer conflict, social anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, and poor self-esteem.

Support and Guidance For Troubled Teens

Although I love offering support to all populations in need, I feel most passionate about working with troubled teens. Adolescence is such a tumultuous period for many, a time when children are eager to branch out on their own, while needing the love and support of caregivers and other reliable adults. I find working with adolescents to be the most rewarding work I’ve done so far in my professional career and look forward to continue building my clinical skills as a team member of Wisdom Within Counseling.

Would Your Adolescent Benefit From Creative Art, Crafts or Fun In Therapy?

I often utilize an art therapy approach in sessions with kids and teens, frequently integrating activities, crafts, collages, painting, drawing, journal prompts and other forms of creative expression to encourage reflection and self-empowerment of my clients. However, my therapeutic approach is not exclusively art based. I consider it imperative to always be attuned to the client’s needs and identifying the best way to engage and help the client on and individualized basis.

Does Your Teen Need Positive Methods of Self-Care and Coping Skills?

I also love working with parents and helping them identify positive methods of supporting their child through teaching healthy communication skills and providing psychoeducation about the specific challenges their child or family faces. But most importantly, I always practice through a lens asserting that the client is the expert of his or her life, and I am the privileged guest who has been invited to join with them.
